Carbon Direct said its guidelines are designed as a "living resource" that will be updated annually, with future versions becoming more advanced as science and market conditions improve. The company said subsequent versions will cover synthetic fuel pathways, renewable natural gas, and applications relevant to specific industries.

"The voluntary low-carbon fuel market is complex, crowded, and rapidly evolving. These guidelines provide buyers with something no single certification currently offers: a unified, accessible, and comprehensive set of quality principles for evaluating the sustainability of their procurement," said Rohan Raman, senior blended decarbonization engineer at Carbon Direct, in the June 16 press release.

Carbon Direct said the low-carbon fuel guidelines build directly on the five editions of the "Guidelines for High-Quality Carbon Dioxide Removal" developed with Microsoft, the latest of which was released last year. Carbon Direct also said the guidelines build on its previously published standards for sustainable forest biomass feedstocks and sustainable agricultural biomass feedstocks for carbon dioxide removal.

The guidelines developed with Microsoft aim to rapidly scale decarbonization solutions through carbon dioxide removal procurement. The two companies said in July 2025 that although a variety of carbon dioxide removal projects exist in the market, many have quality gaps, such as inadequate monitoring, reporting, and verification systems, or a lack of a unified framework. The latest guidelines attempt to bridge this gap by providing standards and guidance covering nine different pathways, including nature-based solutions (such as afforestation and soil carbon sequestration), direct air capture, and marine carbon removal.
