Total solar eclipse may reduce US solar power generation by 40 GWh, how five major grid operators are responding
The total solar eclipse on April 8 in the United States will cause a significant reduction in solar power generation, with Solcast estimating maximum losses at 39.9 GWh. Although grid operators state that reliability is not a concern, weather and human behavioral changes complicate forecasting. Natural gas is expected to be the primary backup power source, with demand response and batteries also participating in regulation. Five major operators, including CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, NYISO, and MISO, have adopted different strategies to address the event.
